I'm not aware of any specific case studies, but you might consider incorporating the function of the heart into the design. The heart is actually similar to a hospital in a lot of ways, lots of independent compartments that very systematically flow through one another. You might also consider metaphorical aspects of the heart and it's relation to the body. Hope that helps.
