Structuralism rose in the post World War II era opposed to the Functionalist movement. It analyzed the impact of architecture on society and criticized modernism for its lack of originality. One of the foremost advocates of Structuralism was Aldo Van Eyck, a prominent Dutch architect whose practice was largely dedicated to an architecture effecting social change. You might look at his orphanage in Amsterdam as an example.

You also might look up the Team 10 Primer as recommended reading on the subject. Van Eyck was a co-founder of that group.
