Atif Ashraf is an Architect, who has studied and worked in Karachi since 1990 till date. He is a corporate (life) member of Pakistan Council of Architects and Town Planners (PCATP) as well as Institute of Architects Pakistan (IAP—Karachi Chapter) and Association for Road Users of Pakistan (ARUP). He has been granted exemption from RIBA I & II examination, accredited by the Common Wealth Association of Architects in 1995-96. He has worked in private sector, on a variety of projects. His recent experience includes the responsibilities on behalf of The Citizens Foundation (TCF), for designing, execution, coordination, critically monitoring and evaluating the progress, substance and impact of all areas of operations, identify the strengths and weaknesses and assist the construction managers in focusing on progress and quality. Further his responsibilities include the contract negotiations & drafting, budget management, management of small and medium size TCF School projects (nominated for the Aga Khan Award of Architecture 2009). His past experience with Lari Associates as Architect & Studio Manager includes the ABN Amro Bank: Country Office building; Karachi, Ladies Sports Complex: Gulshan-e-Iqbal; Karachi and proposals for The state-of-the-art Burns Centre—Jubilee and Victoria Blocks: Civil Hospital; Karachi Projects etc. As an Architect and Research Assistant with Heritage Foundation—a recipient of UN Recognition Award for 2002 for promotion of culture and peace, he has been involved in documentation of KPT Boat Basin, Mules Mansion, Nurses Hostels, Ladies Sports Complex, Lahore & Peshawar Down Town Area (Walled City). He has an experience of photography of Historical buildings and surveys of down town Historic areas particularly, Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar.
He has considerable experience in coordination of various types of drawings. While working on Heritage-related projects, he has been engaged in compiling of various maps and other data for Karachi & Lahore Heritage Guidebooks and is fully conversant with the requirements of handling of city survey maps and the need for accuracy. In the process he has become completely familiar with various parts of the city, particularly the old city areas.
He has generously contributed his creative talent to several of Heritage Foundation publications. The research work and layout of the recently published Travel Guide Lahore, Heritage Guide Karachi: an Illustrated City Guide, The Dual City¬¬—Karachi during the Raj and Peshawar Document 1 have been compiled by him. Similarly, his highly enthusiastic work for A-Z —Streetfinder of Karachi, along with his input in its layout have added enormously to the quality of the publication.
As a Web Expert, he has designed and uploaded the Web page, for Heritage Foundation, from 1999 to 2003.
In the year 1998-2000, he was engaged as a Digital Architect and Map Repair Specialist with LDM Associates on World Bank project "Strengthening of Land Management System at KMC HO Bldg., where he was responsible for Guiding, checking and carrying out scanning/digitization/image processing and editing of 19th and 20th century Maps of KMC. He did a commendable job in Guiding and linkaging of Data base files with CAD on Auto CAD Map.
In the late 1990,s & early 2000 he did a lot of Event Management and Coordination work with KaravanKarachi. He was the Chief Coordinator and Event Manager for KaravanKarachi events and was awarded by Governor Sindh in appreciation of his great work for KaravanKarachi Festival 2001 in December, 2001. He is also a treasury for Heritage Wallay friends of Heritage Foundation.
With Heritage Wallay, he contributed to organize PSO RoadSense programs and KaravanKarachi Heritage Bus tours for Government as well as Private schools as a Tour Coordinator and Guide. He was selected to coordinate and manage the UNESCO—Heritage Foundation workshop on documentation of Walled city Peshawar held on Feb 23—March 1, 2003.
Atif became a financial secretary and a founder member of Heritage Community Resource Centre in May, 2002.
He has traveled extensively across PakistanGeneral history of the Colonial period in Karachi and architectural history in general are his particular interest.
