Bendy Bike

In London, UK, Kevin Scott, a 21-year-old De Montfort University graduate, has invented a revolutionary bicycle that is meant to stop thieves from taking your transportation. The bike uses a ratchet system built into its frame that allows it to wrap around a pole. A bicycle lock can then be looped through both wheels and the frame. This also makes the bicycle easily… Continue

Stadshaard Power Station

That's right, this delftware tile-clad structure is an industrial power plant. It's located in a prominent spot in the city of Enschede in the Netherlands, where a large "neutral" building with a 40-meter high chimney just wouldn't fit. Stadshaard literally means the "city hearth," and is tiled in a modern rendition of the delftware tiles that line Holland’s traditional open hearths. The tiles traditionally are frequented by images of everyday… Continue

Rock-a-Bye Baby

Now that we're all grown up, we don't need mommy to rock us to sleep anymore - because we can do it ourselves! I'm in love with the rocking bed by Private Cloud. I've often wished that there was some way I could rock myself to sleep, and I'm delighted to find that now there is. Not only do I think the giant-ellipse bed is beautiful, but it reportedly can be… Continue

3D Architectural Animation a Great Tool for Architectural Industry - Pred Solutions

Architectural animation is basically a short architectural movie created

on a computer. A computer generated building is created along with

landscaping and sometimes moving people and vehicles. Computer 3D

animation refers to the work of creating moving pictures in a digital

environment that is three-dimensional. So, the careful operation of 3D

models within the 3D software, which will give the misapprehension of

movement, is called animation and it is based on how… Continue

I want to bite it; I bet it tastes like Tang.

In addition to Nestle's Chocolate Museum, Rojkind Arquitectos has designed a laboratory for Nestle. Located in Querétaro, Mexico, the 700 square meter building is formed of austere cubes with a satin finish reflective glass facade. However, along the ground level of the laboratory domed arches in an exuberant orange define the space. Inside, the playfulness continues… Continue

Legs

This is a superb concept by Aedas. This project challenges the unyielding verticality of the skyscraper and allows for a more free expression of the typology. An obviously difficult and structurally problematic design, I hope we begin to see more of these ideas put forth so that our dense urban environments can form architecture in new and interesting ways.…

Loop House

This is a great little house by NDM Architects. As the name suggests, the architecture is a series of loops that fold in and around each other to form each space of the house. Several cantilevers are also utilized to provide shade for the terraces above the swimming pool. The lower living spaces are quite exposed to the outside, making the distinction between interior and exterior less apparent.…

Hiroshima Pyramid Residence

Suppose Design Office has built a rather unique, albeit primitive design for a home in Hiroshima. Utilizing the pyramid form, the design is intended to provide areas of increasing privacy as one moves from the common/living space below to the bedrooms above. The architecture appears to be on stilts to allow for light to flood the lower level through the strip windows lining the base.…

Zero Carbon Elevator Lift

This zero carbon elevator lift was exhibited at the London Festival of Architecture. This elevator is run by solar power and water and is used to transport wheelchair users up the previously inaccessible Duke of York steps. This invention is one of the first of its kind, but hopefully it will spur many more types of sustainable contraptions.…

Cardiff Visitor Center

This visitor center by Alsop Architects was designed as a temporary(two year) structure. The purpose of the project was to exhibit the regeneration strategy for the rundown dockland quarter of the city. Juxtaposed to the Victorian Pierhead Building, this project illustrates how historic and contemporary architecture can complement and enrich the other. Figuratively, the new structure acts as a lens with which…

Kanagawa Institute of Technology

Lumboo

Nope, that's not the name of a new Dr. Seuss character, it's the name of a sustainable building material that could change the lumber industry forever - it's lumber made from bamboo.

To make the Lumboo, the poles of bamboo are shredded and then arranged into a matrix for maximum strength and structural integrity. Then it's strengthened and held together by a low VOC resin and then pressed… Continue
