The simple and stunning Aurland Lookout was the result of a partnership between architects Todd Saunders (Saunders Architecture) and Tommie Wilhelmsen (Arkitekt Tommie Wilhelmsen). Located in Aurland, Norway, the lookout gracefully sweeps down into the landscape below. It also appears dangerous to visitors, implying that an attempt to get the best view could result in sliding to one's doom. Thankfully, a clear barrier separates visitors from taking the plunge, and simultaneously preserves the dramatic illusion. Saunders and Wilhelmsen won first prize to the invited competition in 2002 as part of a National program on tourist routes commissioned by the Norwegian Highway Department. Aurland Lookout was named the Year's Construction in 2006 at the Building Industry's annual gala.
