A Cut Between Heaven and Earth is a 60-meter landmark monument to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA).  The design by Spanish architect Rafael de La-Hoz analyzes the process of abstraction and reinterpretation of the site, and examines the link between sustainability and beauty.  It also moved the landmark from the road junction to a new location that allows a more balanced dialogue between buildings.  A Cut reflects a ray of light visible on December 6th to celebrate the birth of TEDA, allowing the two bodies, one built and the other reflected, to form the "immaterial gateway."
