Sao Paulo-based Studio Arkiz has a concept for a new project in the thick of the Amazon. The Amazon Research Network would be comprised of two components: catamaran-like mobile research units and floating research platforms. The vessels could study several aspects of the intricate environment, while also maintaining a presence that would deter criminal activity. The platforms could house a team of twelve members, with six modular laboratories in biology, geology, eteorology, and zoology. They could also be converted into medical facilities to treat riverside inhabitants. The project would be constructed of local materials and light aluminum, with rooftop photovoltaic panels and a biodigester plant to break down solid waste into bio-gas fuel.
