Near a forest on the outskirts of Katowice, Poland, sits the Broken House, designed by local architecture firm KWK Promes. The somewhat questionable site for the home is a piece of land that has been deteriorated by 4th category mining damage, and where tectonic faults are a possibility. The design of the Broken House reflects its 3,500 square meter site, giving the abstracted impression of shifted geologic layers rising from the ground. The architecture is comprised of a ribbon-like structure that weaves through rectangular solids. An interesting feature that results from this design is a long ramp that doesn’t have a clear delineation between platform and incline, but instead smoothly glides downward in one sloping surface. Skateboard anyone? :)
