The
Bug Dome in Shenszen, China is a result of discussions between Marco Casagrande, Hsieh Ying-chun and Roan Ching-yueh. Together, they refer to themselves as the
WEAK! Architects. The Bug Dome was built last year on a wasted, 3,000 square meter old building site between the Shenzhen City Hall and an illegal workers camp. It is made of bamboo, wood, gravel and recycled concrete using methods based on local knowledge from rural Guanxi workers. During the
SZHK Biennale, the Dome was used for underground bands, poetry reading, discussions and karaoke, as well as a lounge for the illegal workers from the neighboring camp. The structure itself is weak, flexible and improvised to meet the site-specific conditions, growing from a ruin. It is a cocoon for the modern man to escape the imposing urbanism of the city, a mediator between nature and human nature.
