MVRDV is the winner of the international design competition for the China Comic and Animation Museum (CCAM) in Hangzhou, China. The playful design will be instantly recognized as referring to the classic comic speech balloon, with a series of eight balloon-shaped volumes that create the 32,000 square meter museum. The museum’s white concrete façade allows the speech balloons to fill their function by projecting giant text onto them. Inside, wherever the balloons touch, a large circular opening is created, which allows visitors to both view and access the activities in the neighboring space. The project will also include a series of parks, a public plaza, and an expo center.
