House 77, in the very center of "Bairro Norte" in Póvoa de Varzim shares the city's memories and revitalizes a rich legacy of fishing and the sea. Designed by Portuguese firm dIONISO LAB, the distinctive concertinaed stainless steel shutters that cover the front facade are perforated with "siglas poveiras." These symbols are a proto-writing system once used to mark both personal and fishing belongings, and were transmitted down through generations. In this way, the home silently confesses its pride in the city.
When opened, the facade reveals floor-to-ceiling windows and an intimate balcony. The central staircase is the heart of the narrow home, as it provides access to each of the half-floors. The back of the home also has full-height windows, this time protected by more traditional venetian blinds, and opens to a small garden.
