Spanish architecture firm COR & Partners was given the challenge of creating a landmark Music Hall and Auditorium in Algueña, Alicante, Spain with a budget of only 562,800 €. They began with an existing U-shaped building, an old Guardia Civil quarters, and added on a new multipurpose hall, in the process creating an enclosed courtyard. The juxtaposition of new and old is connected by stairs enclosed in visually delicate glass boxes. The newly constructed hall is covered in unique pearly and iridescent ceramics that change the building’s façade with the weather and time of day. The existing building’s exterior was also updated by gathering 60 nearby artists to paint the jambs and lintels of each door and window, as part of an impressive social act that brought together more than 500 people, including musicians and spectators.
