The New Carver Apartments have recently been completed. Designed by Michael Maltzan Architecture for Skid Row Housing Trust, the apartments have 97 units and a total of 57,000 square feet to house the elderly and disabled who were homeless up to this point. Located just south of downtown Los Angeles, almost a mile from the heart of Skid Row, the project aims to construct new optimism for public space. In addition to the housing units, New Carver Apartments incorporates communal kitchens, dining areas, gardens, and gathering spaces. Also, located on the plinth beneath are medical and social services support facilities, with the hope of allowing residents to reconnect not only with each other but with the larger city and society.

Photographs are by Iwan Baan.
