Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility

Sports facilities are an interesting typology for discussion. Sports are ultimately ubiquitous across cultures and classes. Sporting events and teams have immeasurable influence on urban and economic development in the cities where they reside. This Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility by Populous is an excellent example of how sporting facilities are used to spur the growth of the local economy in the coming years. The facility will host both local and national sporting events in Scotland. I would say that any architecture that can support such spacious programs is quite impressive, but the larger question is will this facility promote the kind of growth envisioned for the area. That question is quite important when you consider other developments with similar goals. My beloved Detroit is conducting a similar experiment, slowly locating each of its professional sports teams to the city center. I hope in both cases that this proves fruitful.
