Sir Duncan Rice Library

The Sir Duncan Rice Library of the University of Aberdeen is conceived as a cube that evokes the ice and light of the north.  Its straight exterior is covered in a façade whose myriad angled lines are reminiscent of shards of ice.  By contrast, the interior consists of sweeping contours focused around an asymmetrical atrium that rises diagonally from the ground floor.  The design by Danish Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects is classified as Excellent under the BREEAM ratings system.  The Sir Duncan Rice Library is home to the University’s distinguished collections of unique historic manuscripts, rare books, and archives.  Though completed in 2001, the library was officially opened by the queen on September 24^th.
