The Auditorio de Tenerife, or Tenerife Concert Hall, was finished in 2003 and has become a landmark in the city of Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. The hall is the design of famous Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, and is covered with a mosaic of trencadis, or broken white ceramics. The main hall or Symphony is crowned by a dome and seats over 1,600, while the more intimate chamber hall seats over 400. The dramatic wood paneling in the halls was very deliberately designed off of the results of laser tests to create the best possible acoustics. Rising up like a wave, the roof soars to a height of 58 meters over the main auditorium before curving downward to a point.
