The Hive Apartment is just the first in a series of hip hop inspired buildings by Australia’s ITN Architects. It’s the result of a collaboration by ITN’s Zvi Belling and graffiti artist “Prowla,” both of whom now reside in the building. Constructed principally of concrete, the design includes the word “hive” in large graffiti-style relief, complete with arrows, swooshes and drips. The interior has a sci-fi feeling to it, with a honeycomb-shaped floor tile that seems to fit the building’s name. The anti-establishment inspired architecture hugs an old tailor shop in an exclusive residential suburb, creating an inherent tension, one which hopes to be resolved over time. An ephemeral urban art has become a permanent suburban fixture.
