The Wild Beast Pavilion is both a recital hall and an outdoor performance shell for CalArts.  Clad in copper-hued shingles and nestled into the berm by the entry, Hodgetts + Fung conceived of this performance space similar to the design a of musical instrument.  An acoustically resonant form with simple adjustments to enhance performances is fashioned of functional yet aesthetic materials.  The main volume functions much like the soundboard for a stringed instrument, with a set of windows that create a clerestory and a computer-controlled servos which acts to further "tune" the volume's resonance.  Monumental retracting panels open to convert the space into an outdoor pavilion.
