Tower Studio sits perched on a rocky stretch of Fogo Island shoreline in Newfoundland, Canada. It can only be reached by a 12-inch wide temporary wooden boardwalk. Once that is gone, only a hike along the shore from the adjacent community will reach it.
Tower Studio is one of a series of art studios by Saunders Architecture for Shorefast Foundation and the Fogo Island Arts Corporation. Its faceted form was also the most challenging to construct, ultimately requiring a large-scale model onsite for clarification. Its entry area is equipped with a kitchenette, a compost toilet, and wood- burning fireplace. Its second level is a studio, lit during the day by a large north-facing skylight. A third level is a mezzanine that juts into the double-height volume of the studio.
Tower Studio is tied to a restored traditional Saltbox house within the community. This house is where the artist resides and experiences the hospitality of neighbors, when not fixated on a project in the studio, a fifteen-minute walk away.
