Villa Saitan by EASTERN Design Office, Inc. is located in Kyoto, Japan. It is a residential structure containing eleven housing units, and is bisected by a narrow corridor that is a feature peculiar to Kyoto. The elegant concrete facade is cut to resemble forms found in nature. The 16 x 19 meter site was once the location of the Shihachijo palace, the residence of the hero of the Japanese classical tragedy, “Tale of Heike.” The memory is still told and cherished by the local residents. Hence EASTERN Design Office chose to pay homage to the memory, basing their design on the concept of an "immortal tree."
