J.L. CARMONA + J.V. GARCIA - (2005) - Jaume Fuster Library (Barcelona, Spain)

The Jaume Fuster Library is a public library like no other [http://w110.bcn.cat/portal/site/bibjaumefuster]. A splendid showcase of contemporary Spanish architecture, Jaume Fuster Library was designed by the architects Josep Llinás CARMONA and Joan Vera GARCIA. The building is located just off Plaça Lesseps in the higher reaches of Barcelona's Gràcia district [41°24'27 N-02°09'00 E]. It is named after the prominent local writer and political figure Jaume Fuster. Fuster was one of the chief pioneers in the resurgence of Catalan-language literature following the fall of the Franco dictatorship. The Jaume Fuster Library was awarded the 2006 FAD Architecture Prize, the most prestigious contemporary design prize to receive in Spain. The project was honoured for its delicate implantation in the urban context and the way it opens up new perspectives on the plaza on which it is situated. The library has two levels covering a total of 5.026 m2. The library's interior has a startling luminosity thanks to its mix of maple wood panels and clean white walls. The expressive volume of the exterior and de abundance of its interiors is richly appreciated. It is one of the most modern and biggest public libraries of the city with an auditorium, amphitheatre, exposition room and special kids-spaces.
